Baguette and More-Vietnamese Food Stall in Greenwich that sells Banh Mi

by itchy on June 17, 2009

The Stall is open weekends only and they are situated right next to: Natwest Bank, 2 Greenwich Church St, London, SE10 9BQ

Wow and exciting news for lovers of Vietnamese food:  The lovely historical Greenwich is local to me and so I do spend some parts of the weekend meandering around the wonderful Royal park and the grounds of the Royal Naval College, window shopping whilst walking through the odd melange of stalls in the centre market or sipping a coffee, watching the ships go by.

Banh Mi - Vietnamese Baguette

Banh Mi - Vietnamese Baguette

Anyway, last weekend I took a walk on over to my favourite pie and mash place (another post), situated in a tiny open space right next to Natwest Bank on Greenwich Church Street and lo and behold, I saw not one, but two little stalls selling Vietnamese grub.  One in particular grabbed my attention as they had pictures of big baguettes overflowing with colourful and fresh meat, leaves and herbs.

I walked on over in excitement and excited I was when I saw that they did, as I suspected, sell Banh Mi – Vietnamese baguettes!

To the unassuming, the carefully constructed Vietnamese sandwich is a mix of Vietnamese sausage (a bit like Italian Mortadella), slices of freshly cooked pork, home made pate, then topped with crunchy pickle (carrots, green papaya or kohlraby), watery cucumber, sprigs of coriander (cilantro) and optional fresh chilli.  Wow!

Bite into that crusty baguette and I promise you, you won’t want to look at another Subway again.  Yummmmm!

They also sell prawn and potato fritters, and a small selection of grilled meats with rice but its the Banh Mi that floats my boat and I urge you to give it a try :-)

Banhmi11 are at Ca Phe VN’s Saigon Street Cafe at Benjamin Close, Broadway Market, Hackney E8 Saturdays 10-5 , & hopefully the new Brixton Bazaar world food market every Sunday from August.
The best Vietnamese coffee & tea this side of Saigon, with great baguettes at the stainless steel street cafe.

Thanks for the recommendation Nicky. I’ll go check them out at some point. I’ll be sure to try out the iced coffees as well :-)

I hear the guys at Banh Mi11 had a bit of a problem with their baguettes. Did you manage to sort it out?

Itchy,

Thank you soooooooooooo much for your review on Baguette & More. It was the best vietnamese pork roll i had thus far in London. Banh mi 11 was such a disappointment for me that when baguette & more served up that familiar taste and smell of a true banh mi I was so satisfied that I had two!!! One pork roll and one chicken roll…..YUMMO!

Seems like we are from the same part of world where our tastebuds know a thing or two when it comes to decent authentic vietnamese food. Will definately give mama pho a go next week and will comment accordingly. By the way, is there a mini vietnamese town in London?

Hi Porky, I’m glad you liked the review. I was over in Greenwich last weekend on a bike trip with the family. I, stuffed my face with x2 grilled pork baguettes (banh mi thit nuong) and they, with their pie and mash from Goddard’s. We shared a rhubarb crumble :-)

The baguettes here are absolutely delicious and the two smiley, lovely ladies that run the stall are chatty as hell IF you understand Vietnamese!

As for Banh Mi 11: the experience I had was positive but I know they had some teething problems with their baguettes a couple of months ago and things have improved since then. Their website suggests that they are still a work in progress (or rather in constant flux of improvement). I’d give them another go if I were you :-)

Let me know how you get on at Mama Pho – the pho is good, as is the grilled chicken and my favourite is the chicken curry.

London’s Kingsland Road and Deptford High Street are the closest you’ll get to a “Vietnamese town” and even then it’s more “dirty street corner” than town. Mind you, compared to the communities in Brick Lane and Edgware Road, I don’t think London has a proper Chinatown either. But I digress.

Tip for you: If you like Hanoi style bun thit nuong (grilled pork on vermicelli) then then head on over to Banh Cuom on Lee High Road, SE13. I couldn’t make it better myself :-)

Happy eating!

I tried Baguette and More today and thought the food was great – authentic southern Vietnamese food! The Banh mi thit was pretty close to how they make it in Sydney (that’s a huge thumbs up!) The grilled chicken roll very tasty an tender (I recommend try it without the bbq sauce). I also tried the com bi (rice with shredded pork with shallots) and that was tasty too. The lady Lien is soo nice and friendly we came back and got take away for dinner! We had the bun thit nuong and it was very yummy! We use to go to Paris to fix our banh mi thit cravings but now I’ll be going to Baguette and More – spread the word … there is decent banh mit thit in Greenwich – Baguette and More!

Itchy… I couldnt agree any more with you guys! The Banh Mi at Baguette and More is awesome!! Same as NhuD.. no need to go to Paris anymore…

I will give Mama Pho a go…. so far I found Song Que’s Pho to be the best in London but its still nowhere near as good as the Pho in Paris or Sydney… shall let you guys know what we think :)

Hi all,
I’m just glad that Banh Mi is starting to become available. Starting being the operative word! I look forward to a whole load more :-)

Let me know what you think of the other Vietnamese (or any other) places that I’ve reviewed.
