Let’s get a fact out of the way: Savannah Jerk (used to be Mr Jerk) is NOT owned by it’s illustrious neighbour, Jerk City and it seems the owner of Savannah is trying to piggyback off Jerk City’s substantial and loyal customers.
I adore Jerk City (which is also reviewed on this site) and am one of it’s loyal clients but I thought ‘what the heck’ and decided to give this place a go.
The wife and I popped in before the Hard Rock Calling festival (Springsteen yeeeaahh). There were two other couples in there so had no problems finding a seat. Savannah is definitely positioning itself as a more formal eating experience in terms of the layout so in that respect they are trying something slightly different. I prefer the homely surroundings of Jerk City myself but I think Caribbean food is homely.
Anyway, I ordered the Curry Chicken and Wife ordered the Stewed Oxtail with Hard Food (boiled yam, plantain and dumplings). Curry Chicken was cooked on the bone, tender and well flavoured but the Oxtail was tough. An absolute crime as far as we were concerned. It could’ve been an off day but it’s unlikely I’ll give them another go in the future – the fact that dishes are about £2 dearer than it is next door has put paid to that!
Also, can somebody tell me why hard food is called hard food?
